Fairfield Girls shine in GCSE results

Smiles and excitement all round as students opened their results envelopes this morning

Fairfield High School for Girls in Droylsden is celebrating another year of strong GCSE outcomes, with pupils, staff, and families marking an emotional and rewarding results day.

The school continues to close the gap for disadvantaged pupils, whose attainment and progress now match those of their peers. Almost 90% of all pupils achieved a pass in English, with notable successes across a wide range of subjects.

In particular, GCSE Physics pupils excelled, defying the national trend which typically sees girls underperform compared to boys. More than half of Fairfield’s Physics students achieved a grade 7 or higher. Computer Science pupils also shone, with almost half securing a grade 7 or above – another area where girls nationally tend to lag behind boys. Across the curriculum, pupils collectively achieved 87 Grade 9s or equivalent.

For many pupils, results day was filled with relief and excitement.

Head Girl Omolewa Jacqueline said: “I did, like, really, really good. I got sevens which are A’s and what I needed. So, I’m like, really, really, like, overjoyed, because I can like do the things that I want to later on which makes me really, really, like, you know, ecstatic. Yeah, I’m going Loreto Sixth Form to do chemistry, bio and psychology, because I want to go into medicine, probably like a psychiatrist or a surgeon.”

Caitlin added: “I did really well. I’m really, really happy. I’m going to Ashton Sixth Form and doing literature, history and fine art. To celebrate I’m going out for a meal later and then going shopping after I enrol at college.”

Faleesha admitted she had feared the worst but was delighted with her results: “I did better than I thought I was gonna do, because I thought I was going to like fail everything – I had nightmares and everything – but I didn’t. I got better than what I actually needed. I’m either going to go to Loreto or Ashton and I’m going to study biology, chemistry and philosophy, ethics and religion.”

Twins Daisy, Tilly, and friend Layla were equally thrilled.

Daisy said: “I got three eights and one nine.”

Tilly shared: “Two eights, one nine and then one seven, and then the rest six’s and five’s.”

Layla added: “I got two eights, one nine, and three sevens.”

Daisy, Tilly and Layla are heading to college together

All three are heading to Ashton Sixth Form together to study History, with Layla also planning to pursue criminology, Daisy opting for IT and sports performance, and Tilly set to study accounting and philosophy. Laughing about the build-up to the big day, they confessed: “We didn’t get much sleep last night – it was stressful! We did a lot of revision though.”

Head of School, Fee Lealman, praised the achievements of the class of 2025: “We are delighted that pupils have achieved some excellent GCSE and Vocational Course results, having worked with dedication and commitment during some very challenging times. Our vision is for our pupils to be successful learners who are aspirational, inquisitive and hard working. Once again this has been realised in this year’s strong examination results.

“All pupils, regardless of their circumstance, are given the opportunity to learn in an inspiring environment, where they can develop as young people and leave with the grades enabling them to pursue their interests and passions. This was evident this morning as pupils received their results; there were squeals of delight and tears of joy as pupils realised what they had achieved.

“We hope that the learning journey over the past five years, which has seen our pupils grow and develop, has equipped them with the knowledge, skills and resilience to succeed in all that the future brings. The class of 2025 leave Fairfield to join all the other successful ‘old girls’ in our ongoing strong record of excellent results. We wish all our pupils all the very best as they move on to new challenges.”

With high achievement across the board, from top grades in sciences and computer science to remarkable success stories from individual pupils, Fairfield High School for Girls continues to strengthen its reputation for excellence in education – and for inspiring the next generation of ambitious young women.
