Tameside & Glossop NHS Charity has received a welcome boost after a generous donation of £403.73 from Denton Striders Walking Football Group, raised during their annual fundraising tournament.
The event took place on Saturday, 14 March 2026, at Denton Youth Football Club, bringing together players and supporters from across the community in aid of a local cause. Each year, the group selects a charity to benefit from the tournament, and for 2026 they chose to support Tameside Hospital’s Dementia Fund.
The funds raised will go towards supporting patients at Tameside Hospital who are living with dementia, helping to enhance the care and services available to them.
Also known as Denton Walking Football Group, Tameside Striders is a friendly, community-based organisation that meets twice a week at Denton Youth F.C. on King Street. The group offers a slower-paced version of the game, designed primarily for older adults, promoting physical activity, wellbeing and social connection in a safe and inclusive environment.
Sessions run throughout the year, with players aged 60 and over taking part in mixed-ability games that prioritise enjoyment over competition. While the group occasionally participates in competitive matches, its main focus is on regular internal games and fostering a welcoming atmosphere for all involved.
Players meet every Tuesday and Thursday, with sessions tailored to different age groups, and round off each gathering with the chance to socialise over a cup of tea.
Lawrence O’Toole, Secretary of Denton Striders Walking Football Group, said: “We’re proud to support such an important cause in our local community. The support from everyone who took part made this donation possible.”
Emily Whelan, Charity Manager at Tameside & Glossop NHS Charity, added: “We are incredibly grateful to Denton Striders for their fantastic fundraising efforts. Donations like this make a real difference to patients living with dementia and help us enhance the care and support we provide.”
