Ashton Old Baths opened its doors to the public on Saturday, 30 August, welcoming visitors for a lively afternoon of community celebration, creativity, and nostalgia.
The event, held from 12 noon to 3pm, marked a significant moment in the ongoing story of the historic building’s transformation from a disused Victorian bathhouse into a vibrant centre of innovation.
Families and visitors of all ages enjoyed a packed programme of free entertainment and activities that showcased the unique character and new purpose of the landmark site. A professional magician kept the crowds amused with jaw-dropping tricks, while a hands-on chocolate-making workshop proved popular with younger guests – and their sweet-toothed parents.
For those feeling competitive, giant versions of Jenga and Connect 4 sparked friendly rivalries, while a retro arcade zone offered a blast from the past with classic games like Pac-Man, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Space Invaders.
Adding to the festival atmosphere were the sweet smells of freshly made Dutch pancakes and waffles, topped with an array of indulgent treats – the perfect fuel for an afternoon of family fun.
But the day was about more than just entertainment. The open day also gave residents the rare opportunity to step inside Ashton Old Baths and see first-hand how the Grade II listed building has been carefully reimagined for the 21st century. Now a modern business and innovation hub, the building is home to a range of small and medium-sized enterprises in the digital and creative industries. Its striking interior – blending original architectural features with sleek, contemporary design – left many visitors impressed.
The free fun day tickets were sold out weeks before the event, showing the public interest in visiting Ashton Old Baths.
Originally opened in 1870, Ashton Old Baths was once the largest public swimming pool in the country. After closing its doors in the 1970s, the building stood empty for decades before being carefully restored and repurposed.
