An interpretation of LS Lowry’s 1953 painting ‘Going to the Match’ is the subject of a silent fund-raising auction that St Michael’s Church Ashton.
Painted by artist Nicola Ward Tonkinson, a member of the congregation at St Michael and All Angels, it shows football fans heading towards Burnden Park, the former home of Bolton Wanderers where the stands are filling up with supporters.
It is a remarkable copy, oil on board, beautifully framed and measuring 69cm by 78cm.
The original was owned for many years by the ProfessIonal Football Association before secured by The Lowry in 2022 and since then it has been on tour of North West towns.
For anyone wishing to view the painting, it will be on display in the church at the Heritage Open Days over the weekend of September 13/14.
