Concerts by Candlelight to bring glowing musical magic to Stalybridge

Talland String Quartet

This autumn, Stalybridge will shine a little brighter — not just with the soft flicker of candlelight, but with the rich, emotive sounds of live classical music.

The town's historic Victoria Market Hall (Stalybridge Civic Hall) will play host to the first in a new series of Concerts by Candlelight, promising unforgettable evenings of music, community, and atmosphere.

Launching on Friday 3 October, the debut event features a double bill of exceptional performances. Opening the night, the Talland String Quartet will be joined by talented students from the Royal Northern College of Music, performing timeless seasonal works from classical greats including Haydn and Tchaikovsky.

They’ll be followed by the bold and genre-blending Vulva Voce – fresh from their performance at Glastonbury Festival. Drawing on influences from classical, folk, jazz and techno, the group will perform works from their debut EP Maddalena, spotlighting underrepresented voices and pushing musical boundaries in stunning fashion.

Whether you're a seasoned lover of classical music or simply looking for a new experience, this concert promises to be something truly unique - a celebration of creativity, connection and the powerful role music plays in bringing people together.

Tickets for the first concert are on sale now via www.intameside.co.uk/bycandlelight, priced at £9 per person, with concessions also available.

Following the autumn concert, the series will return in Spring 2026 with a powerful event marking International Women's Day on Sunday 8 March.

Headlining the second Concert by Candlelight will be the trailblazing Untold Orchestra, known for their innovative performances and genre-spanning tributes. This special event will pay homage to musical icons from Aretha Franklin to Taylor Swift, and will feature performances from local women's choirs, creating a heartfelt celebration of female voices and artistry.

The Concerts by Candlelight series is part of a broader programme of cultural events being hosted at Stalybridge Civic Hall, bringing life, music, and creativity into the heart of Tameside.

Cllr Leanne Feeley, Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture, said: "The summer programme has been brilliant! Both the comedy weekend and the Pop-Up beach have been really popular with all ages and families. The Candlelight concerts will bring something different again and it's a really good opportunity for everyone to experience something special - as well as one for those who already love classical music to enjoy! It's going to be really magical, and I can't wait to see the Hall in full glow!"
