Celebrating 110 years of Scouting at Droylsden heritage garden party

A proud milestone is on the horizon for a local Scout group in Droylsden, as they prepare to mark 110 years of adventure, community, and outdoor fun in 2026.

In celebration of this remarkable anniversary, the group is inviting the public to its first-ever Heritage Open Day - a joyful Heritage Garden Party taking place on Ellen Street, Droylsden M43 7YA on September 21st 2025, from 12:00 to 14:00.

This event kicks off a year-long programme of celebrations that will honour the group's long-standing contribution to the community. Formed in 1916, the Scout group has grown through the decades, now welcoming children and young people across all sections - from Squirrels and Beavers to Cubs, Scouts and Explorers. They also share their welcoming space with Rainbows and Brownies.

The Garden Party promises something for all ages. Visitors can enjoy traditional garden games, arts and crafts, and explore a fascinating collection of artefacts and photographs that span the group's 110-year history. A large display of photos will offer a glimpse into the past, showcasing how Scouting has evolved through the decades.

Everyone is welcome, from current members and their families to anyone who has been part of the group in years gone by. The organisers are especially keen to gather former Scouts and leaders to share their stories and memories with today’s volunteers, and a group photograph will be taken to capture this special moment in the group's timeline.

Volunteers will be serving up home-baked scones with jam and cream, along with tea and coffee, adding a classic touch to the afternoon.

The event will take place in and around the group's beloved Scout hut, a building over 50 years old that has been lovingly cared for by dedicated volunteers. Surrounding the hut is a large garden, complete with a wildflower area, allotment, and plenty of room for fun and games. It’s also a key space for weekly activities, where young members are taught practical and social skills, often using resources made from recycled materials.

Looking ahead, the group has big plans, including a full-group summer camp in 2026, ensuring the next generation continues to benefit from the values and experiences that have shaped the past century.
