Campaign launched for Haughton Green Village regeneration

Denton South councillor George Newton has launched a campaign calling for a significant investment in Haughton Green Village, urging Tameside Council to allocate a fair share of the borough’s £1.5 million Government “Pride in Place” funding to the community.

The Pride in Place programme is intended to support community-led regeneration, enhance high streets, improve public spaces, and boost pride across local areas. Cllr Newton says Haughton Green Village is a clear candidate for targeted improvement, having seen “no significant regeneration project in living memory.”

Cllr Newton argues that a facelift to the public realm is long overdue, arguing that Haughton Green has not benefited from the investment seen elsewhere in the borough.

Cllr Newton believes that targeted improvements to the high street, including upgraded paving, lighting, signage, street furniture, and greening, would send a strong signal that the village is “open for business”, helping attract footfall, retain traders, and restore confidence among local businesses.

While major regeneration projects continue in town centres such as Ashton, Hyde, Stalybridge, and Denton, Cllr Newton warns that smaller neighbourhoods like Haughton Green risk being left behind if funding is not distributed equitably.

He stresses that investing in Haughton Green would complement, not compete with, these larger schemes, helping to “knit together” Tameside’s wider regeneration strategy by ensuring vibrancy is spread across local communities rather than concentrated in a few key locations.

Cllr Newton has formally requested a meeting with senior council officers and cabinet members to shape a practical regeneration plan that can be delivered quickly and visibly.

Describing the Pride in Place allocation as a “rare opportunity” to reverse years of underinvestment, Cllr Newton reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring Denton South receives a fair and substantial share of the new funding.

He has also encouraged officers to engage directly with residents and ward councillors so that the final regeneration plan reflects the priorities of the community and delivers meaningful, long-term benefits.

The campaign is expected to form a major local talking point in the coming months as the council considers how the £1.5 million pot should be distributed across Tameside.
