A prolific burglar who targeted homes across Tameside and Manchester has been jailed for more than eight years.

Darren Townsend, 51, of Carfax Street, Manchester, was sentenced to eight years and five months at Minshull Street Crown Court on Tuesday, 17 November 2025, after earlier pleading guilty to a string of burglary and attempted burglary offences.

Townsend’s offending spanned the month of August and included 14 attempted burglaries in Denton and another attempted break in in Ancoats. Police launched an investigation following the reports, and Townsend was arrested before the end of the month.

Detective Sergeant Alexandra Smith from Tameside’s Neighbourhood Crime Team said the sentence reflected both the seriousness and the scale of his crimes.

“Townsend is a prolific burglar, and this sentence is reflective of the crimes he has committed,” she said.

“The team worked hard to secure the extensive CCTV footage and statements which were crucial in identifying Townsend and securing his conviction.

“I am aware of the impact that Townsend’s crimes have had on the victims of this case and hopefully this sentence will bring them some sense of justice.”

DS Smith added that officers remain committed to tackling burglary across the borough and urged the public to continue reporting suspicious behaviour.

“The team are dedicated to thoroughly and robustly dealing with all burglaries and encourage the continued engagement from the public in reporting offences, so people like Townsend can be brought to justice.

“If you have any information about burglaries or thefts in your area, please get in touch with your local officers – we act on all information and will assist where we can. You can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 if you’d prefer.”
