A major transformation of Denton town centre is a step closer as Tameside Council’s Executive Cabinet prepares to consider a bold regeneration plan later this month.
Backed by £16.8 million from the UK Government, subject to final approval, and additional funding from Transport for Greater Manchester, the programme promises to deliver a greener, safer, and more vibrant Denton.
The proposals are the result of extensive community engagement, with residents emphasising the need for better transport links, improved youth facilities, enhanced safety, and more accessible green spaces.
Developed by urban design specialists Planit IE in partnership with the Council’s Strategic Growth Team, the vision sets out a series of transformative projects to improve public spaces and strengthen connections across the town.
The plans include greener streets and civic spaces featuring climate-resilient planting and high-quality landscaping, as well as over 1.1km of enhanced walking and cycling routes to encourage active travel.
Town centre streets such as Manchester Road and Market Street will be revitalised to create more welcoming, attractive environments for businesses, shoppers and visitors.
The scheme also proposes improved public space on Queen Street, along with upgrades around Festival Hall and Denton Town Hall. In addition, child-friendly school streets and upgraded wayfinding will help make the town centre safer, easier to navigate, and more accessible for all.
The first phase of improvements is expected to be delivered by March 2026, marking a significant early step in reshaping the town.
Cllr Andrew McLaren, Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Growth, Housing and Homelessness, said: “The plans represent a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform Denton town centre. They reflect what residents told us they want, including better public spaces, improved transport links, and a town centre that celebrates local identity. It will be great to get these early works underway and see changes happening soon.”
Eleanor Lygo, Senior Urban Designer at Planit, added: “The overriding masterplan vision is to establish Denton as a place that residents and its visitors can feel proud of for generations to come. The Government funds will support short- and long-term benefits, revitalising its unique elevated town centre with new public realm and greener streets. This is about putting the community at the heart of the town and delivering health and well-being benefits while building climate resilience.”
Work will be delivered in phases through to 2028.
