Members of the Ashton United Supporters Club are gearing up for another demanding sponsored walk this weekend as they continue their efforts to raise funds for local football and community initiatives.
On Saturday, March 28, the dedicated group will set off in the early hours of the morning from Ashton United Football Club, taking on a 24.3-mile journey to Stocksbridge Park Steels Football Club. The walk is expected to take around nine hours, with participants aiming to arrive in time for the 3pm kick-off.
The challenge marks the latest in a series of fundraising efforts organised by the supporters, who have built a reputation for going the extra mile, quite literally, for their club and community. Their previous sponsored walk in 2024 saw them travel 38.5 miles over two days from Ashton to Matlock Town Football Club, a feat that tested both physical endurance and determination.
This weekend’s walk, while shorter in distance, will be completed in a single day, presenting a different kind of challenge for those taking part. With an early start and a tight schedule to meet, participants will need to maintain a steady pace throughout in order to reach their destination on time.
The initiative is about more than just the walk itself. The supporters are aiming to raise £750, with funds going towards the Ashton United Official Supporters Club and Ashton United in the Community. Both organisations play a key role in supporting grassroots football, running community programmes, and helping to bring people together through the game.
From organising events and matchday activities to supporting outreach work in the local area, the groups rely on fundraising efforts such as this to continue their work. The sponsored walk is not only a test of endurance but also a reflection of the strong sense of community that surrounds the club.
Participants say the walk is driven by their passion for Ashton United and their desire to give something back. The effort highlights the important role supporters play beyond the stands, contributing time, energy and resources to ensure the club and its associated initiatives continue to thrive.
With the target set and preparations underway, the walkers will be hoping for favourable conditions as they make their way across to Stocksbridge. Regardless of the weather, spirits are expected to be high as the group once again comes together in support of a shared cause.
