Ashton set for out-of-this-world Sci-Fi Day return this May

Ashton town centre will once again be transformed into a galaxy far, far away when the much-loved Ashton Sci-Fi Day returns on May 2.

Organised by Hyde Fundraisers, the annual event will bring a host of fantasy, superhero and science fiction characters to the town, delighting visitors of all ages. The group, which recently celebrated 40 years of fundraising for good causes, is working in partnership with Tameside Markets, Ladysmith Shopping Centre, Ashton Town Team and Ashton Library to deliver this year’s event.

Visitors can expect to encounter a range of iconic characters, including R2D2, Chewbacca, The Mandalorian, Predator and Davros, with plenty of opportunities to snap photos and immerse themselves in the sci-fi spectacle.

A highlight for 2026 will be the cosplay competition, taking place at Ladysmith Shopping Centre from 12.30pm. Organised by The Anthony Seddon Fund, the competition is open to all ages and is expected to attract creative costumes from across the community. The shopping centre will also host appearances from R2D2 and a Chewbacca display, alongside life-sized character cutouts dotted throughout the venue.

Ashton Market Hall will once again play a central role in the celebrations. Tameside Rotary will be present, alongside impressive Lego displays from Cameron McWiggan and members of Northern Bricks. To mark 25 years of Ashton’s sci-fi events, a special photo exhibition will look back at previous celebrations and honour the memory of Peter Hawley.

At Ashton Library, families can enjoy a superhero-themed programme, including free colouring activities for younger visitors.

The Market Hall will also host a demonstration from Sitsiam Martial Arts, showcasing their “out of this world” skills, while live music will be provided by young performer Jack Doyle.

SP Bowling of Hyde Fundraisers said: “Ashton Sci-Fi Day is a popular fixture in the Ashton events calendar and our own. This year we also pay tribute to Peter Hawley, former town centre manager, who passed away in February, because he instigated these events over 25 years ago with us.

“His confidence and innovative approach inspired us to partner with him, which has now created this amazing legacy. Thank you again to all our supporters and sponsors who make this event happen and enable our donations to some amazing organisations.”

Hyde Fundraisers, a voluntary group established in 1985, has raised significant funds for charities through its themed events featuring characters from Doctor Who, Star Wars and other popular franchises.

Charities set to benefit from this year’s Sci-Fi Day include Tameside Little Gems, The Anthony Seddon Fund, the RSPCA, Beechwood Cancer Care and Door 84.

The event is sponsored by Ladysmith Shopping Centre, Tameside Markets and Ashton Town Team through UK Government Pride in Place funding.
