Ashton barista reaches national final in Costa Coffee competition

A barista from Costa Coffee’s Snipe Retail Park store in Ashton-under-Lyne is celebrating after being named one of just 12 finalists in the company’s prestigious 2026 UK and Ireland Barista of the Year competition.

Mitchell Dyne, 29, has earned a place in the final after competing against hundreds of Costa Coffee baristas from across the UK and Ireland. Mitchell has worked for Costa Coffee for the past three years and is based at the Snipe Retail Park Drive Thru store.

The Barista of the Year competition has been run by Costa Coffee since 2006 and is designed to recognise the skill, creativity and passion of its barista community, giving them a national and international platform to showcase their craft.

Over the past few months, Mitchell impressed judges during two demanding local rounds. The first stage tested precision and consistency, with competitors required to perfect four Costa Coffee drinks that reflect the brand’s signature taste and quality. In the second round, Mitchell created an original speciality drink, the “Miner’s Gold Latte”, demonstrating creativity and technical expertise.

Speaking about the achievement, Mitchell said: “I entered Barista of the Year competition to challenge myself, broaden my coffee knowledge, and push myself beyond my comfort zone. My proudest moment so far has been getting the chance to showcase my skills and experience throughout all the local stages – it’s been an incredible opportunity so far.

“I’d tell anyone thinking about entering next year to just go for it – it’s a fun, friendly competition, and a great way to meet and connect with people you might not otherwise get the chance to.”

The UK and Ireland Barista of the Year final will take place on February 3 and 4, 2026. The 12 finalists will compete across three rounds designed to test precision, creativity and technical skill. The competition also celebrates the care and attention that goes into every cup of Costa Coffee, including its iconic Mocha Italia blend.

The top three competitors from the UK and Ireland final will progress to the Global Final in March, where they will compete against baristas from India, the UAE, Poland and China. The event brings together outstanding talent from Costa Coffee’s worldwide community of more than 18,000 baristas.
