Ashton and Stalybridge redevelopment plan approved

Two giant town centre redevelopment schemes have been pushed forward by town hall bosses.

Thousands of new homes, integrated transport networks, improved town centres and growth centred around transport hubs have all been earmarked for Ashton and Stalybridge.

At their latest meeting, Tameside council chiefs formally agreed the creation of a Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) for Ashton and Stalybridge – an ambitious growth plan to deliver housing, leisure and retail offer in both towns.

The MDC seeks to drive the regeneration and redevelopment around the rail, tram, bus and active travel corridors. The towns are both ideal commuter spots, with Ashton being 10 minutes and Stalybridge 12 minutes from Manchester city centre by train.

Their train stations will be brought into the Bee Network transport system by 2028, which brings with it seamless payments across transport modes and general accessibility improvements. Additionally regeneration of both towns will be focused around those transport hubs, the meeting in the Tameside One building was told.

New retail and leisure offers, as well as around 3,000 new homes, are part of the package this MDC is looking to bring in.

Although masterplans for the regeneration of Ashton and Stalybridge are already well established, this MDC is required because the two towns currently suffer from development constraints. Town hall bosses also agreed to ‘strategic property acquisitions’ at the meeting on March 25, which effectively purchases land in order to unlock future redevelopment work.

Leader of Tameside council, Eleanor Wills, said: “By approving these strategic acquisitions, we place the council firmly in control of the town centre’s transformation unlocking new homes, new jobs, a new sustainable pool and sport and leisure offer and the kind of modern, vibrant environment our residents deserve.

“This is about shaping our own destiny. Instead of waiting for the market to decide what happens in Ashton, we are taking proactive leadership by securing key sites, preparing the ground for transport‑led regeneration, and building the foundations of a future Mayoral Development Corporation that will accelerate growth across Ashton and Stalybridge.

“Our partnership with Greater Manchester combined authority, our shared vision, and our commitment to inclusive growth all come together at this moment.

“These acquisitions show ambition, confidence, and belief in what Ashton can become. Let’s move forward decisively and continue delivering a town centre that works for every generation.”
