Angela Rayner MP for Ashton-under-Lyne paid a visit to a supported housing scheme in Ashton last week to meet some of its residents and hear more about the help and support they receive.
Haven House, on Vernon Street, was opened in March 2023 by local housing provider Jigsaw Homes Group with funding from the Government’s Rough Sleeping Accommodation Programme. It provides 23 self-contained apartments and support for people who have experienced homelessness, through Jigsaw Support.
She was welcomed by Brian Moran, Jigsaw Homes Group Chief Executive, Chair of Jigsaw Group Board Roli Barker alongside Mathew George, Group Director of Asset Management, Kerrie Pryde, Operations Director of Jigsaw Support and Lynda Guy, Team Leader. She also met and chatted to residents and had a tour of the building.
Resident Jack* said: “When I first came here, I needed support with a lot of things, but I feel as if I have grown in confidence and don’t need as much now. I have family and friends who visit a lot so that has helped me as well.
“Supported housing really works for people like me, especially the keyworkers and how much they care. They have really helped me overcome some of the issues that I have experienced and I’m now ready to move on to my own place.”
Ms Rayner said: “It was great to see and hear first-hand, about the support that is available to help people lead independent and fulfilling live and see the life-changing impact that supported accommodation provides.”
Brian Moran said: “We are extremely proud to be able to provide high-quality accommodation with support. We work with residents to develop their skills around budgeting, home maintenance, wellbeing and life skills, meaning they are in a better position to move on to a permanent tenancy. This is a real chance for the residents to make important changes in their lives and move away from homelessness for good.”
Ms Rayner’s visit coincides with the National Housing Federation’s Save Our Supported Housing campaign, which highlights the vital role that supported housing plays in providing safe, stable, and compassionate accommodation for some of the most vulnerable members of our communities.
