A hidden gem of community spirit: Hattersley Projects brings locals together

Hattersley Projects garden centre

Nestled in the heart of Hattersley is a thriving hub of activity and togetherness that many are calling the beating heart of the community.

Hattersley Projects, entirely run by a dedicated team of volunteers, is quietly transforming lives across Tameside and Glossop - and they’re inviting more people to get involved.

From relaxing sound baths and pamper nights to muddy forest schools and buzzing beehives, the range of activities offered here is as diverse as the people it serves. Whether you’re young or old, in need of connection or simply looking for a new hobby, there’s something for everyone at the centre.

Wellbeing for all

One of the project’s highlights is its monthly Well Women’s Group, providing a safe, supportive space for women to unwind, connect and care for their mental and physical wellbeing. This August, the group tried something new - a sound bath experience.

One attendee told us: “I just thought it would be a nice relaxing evening. It’s something I’ve not done before, so it’s a new experience for me and my friends. I’ve never done a sound bath before, so this is going to be a new one for us tonight.”

Future sessions promise just as much relaxation and creativity, with pamper nights and wreath-making workshops also planned.

Growing more than just plants

The centre’s community allotments and garden centre are blooming, both literally and figuratively. Everything in the garden centre is grown from bud to bloom on-site, before being sold to support the project.

Volunteers also grow fruit and vegetables, including grapes and bananas.

Adding to the site’s sustainability and charm are the bee hives, from which volunteers harvest and sell local honey - a sweet success story of community care and environmental awareness.

A place for children to thrive

The site also runs a forest school, providing hands-on outdoor learning for children. School holidays are jam-packed with fun, family-friendly events - all of which include a lunch. One recent theme, “Dinosaurs”, proved a roaring success, attracting almost a hundred visitors from across Tameside and Glossop.

For children who find mainstream school challenging, the project hosts sessions for a SEND school and offers alternative provision, giving every child a chance to learn and grow in a supportive environment.

And every Saturday from 12–3pm, the project welcomes little ones to the Seedlings group, where children can play freely and explore the site’s natural wonders.

Coffee, cake and community

The Elderberries Café, also open on Saturdays from 12–3pm, has become a local favourite. With its slogan “a coffee, a cake and a friendly café,” it offers a warm, welcoming place to relax and meet others.

Whether you're popping in for a brew or staying for the community spirit, the café is a key part of what makes Hattersley Community Project special.

Mark your calendars

The project’s calendar is always full, with upcoming highlights including a Macmillan Coffee Morning in September, as well as Halloween and Christmas events that promise festive fun for the whole family.

Volunteers at the heart

None of this would be possible without the tireless efforts of the volunteers who run the centre. From supporting children’s groups to growing plants and serving cakes, these everyday heroes are the lifeblood of the project.

They’re currently on the lookout for more volunteers to join the team. Whether you're a green-fingered gardener, a budding barista or just want to give back to your community, there’s a role for you.

Hattersley Projects is more than just a community centre - it’s a lifeline, a launchpad, and a living example of what can happen when people come together with a shared purpose.
