Residents of Assheton House in Ashton are now living in safer, warmer, and more energy-efficient homes, following a £6 million transformation project by local housing provider Jigsaw Homes Tameside.
The ten-storey high-rise on Water Street has undergone major upgrades as part of Jigsaw’s largest building safety improvement scheme to date. Works began in February 2024 and concluded this month (September 2025), marking a significant milestone in the provider’s commitment to modernising its housing stock.
The building now boasts a new thermally efficient façade, upgraded ventilation systems, and new front doors and windows for all 89 flats. These improvements are aimed not only at improving residents’ comfort but also significantly reducing carbon emissions.
A new electrical boiler heating system has been installed throughout the building, replacing older systems to enhance energy efficiency and bolster fire safety. As part of enhanced safety measures, a state-of-the-art Evacuation Alert System has also been fitted, alongside the re-lining of five communal soil vent pipes.
In addition to the internal improvements, the building’s exterior has also been revitalised. Contractor Casey, which oversaw the refurbishment, has transformed part of the building’s frontage into a vibrant communal space with new seating, planting, and a community garden designed to encourage resident wellbeing and social interaction.
Gary Heaton, Operations Director of Asset Management at Jigsaw Homes Group, said: "These improvements are part of our commitment to future-proofing our homes. By upgrading the facade, insulation and heating systems, we're not only ensuring Assheton House meets the highest safety standards, but also making homes warmer, more efficient and more comfortable for our residents."
Steve Goodwin, Senior Contracts Manager at Casey, added: "This has once again been a great example of partnership between Jigsaw and Casey. It's great to see the transformation and the positive impact this work has had on residents' lives, bringing Assheton House back to life while improving its safety and efficiency."
The project at Assheton House follows similar energy efficiency works carried out at Chartist House in Ashton and Thompson Court in Stalybridge. Jigsaw Homes has confirmed that further upgrades are planned at John Grundy House in Hyde in early 2026, as part of its wider efforts to modernise and safeguard its older housing stock.
