Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman warns of rising cases of “AI psychosis”

There are increasing reports of people suffering "AI psychosis", Microsoft's head of artificial intelligence (AI), Mustafa Suleyman, has warned.

In a series of posts on X, he wrote that "seemingly conscious AI" – AI tools which give the appearance of being sentient – are keeping him "awake at night" and said they have social impact even though the technology is not conscious in any human definition of the term.

"There's zero evidence of AI consciousness today. But if people just perceive it as conscious, they will believe that perception as reality," he wrote.

UK's Equality Regulator Criticised Met Police Using Facial Recognition

The UK's equality regulator has criticised the Metropolitan Police's use of live facial recognition technology (LFR), saying the way it is being deployed is breaching human rights law.

The tech works by scanning the faces of people recorded on CCTV and then comparing them against a watchlist of people who the police are seeking.

The Met says it has made more than 1,000 arrests since January 2024 using LFR and is confident it uses it in a lawful way.

But the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) says the tech should only be used in a necessary and proportionate way, and is arguing "the Metropolitan Police's current policy falls short of this standard."

The EHRC has been granted permission to intervene in an upcoming judicial review into the force's use of the surveillance tool.

Officers took 15 illegal e-bikes and e-scooters off the streets in Cheltenham and 33 in Gloucester in a recent operation.

🛡️ Security Corner 🛡️

We're often told that the passwords to access our online accounts should be really strong, and not to use them anywhere else. This is especially true for the password for your email account. If you've used the same password across different accounts, cyber criminals only need one password to access all your accounts.

Always use a strong and separate password for your email; that is, a password that you don’t use for any of your other accounts, either at home or at work.
