State-Of-The-Art Quantum Computer Turned On
A new state-of-the-art quantum computer said to be the most advanced in the world has just been switched on.
The full-stack computer, called Quartet, has been delivered to the UK's National Quantum Computing Centre at its Harwell campus in Oxfordshire by Oxford Ionics - a leading manufacturer in trapped-ion quantum computing.
Dr Chris Ballance, Oxford Ionics chief executive and co-founder, said that meant they could "solve problems in minutes, we otherwise wouldn't think of solvable at all with a computer".

HMRC Confirmed The Use Of AI Monitoring Social Media
HMRC has confirmed it uses artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor social media posts as part of criminal investigations into suspected tax cheats.
It said the tech would not replace "human decision-making" and was subject to legal oversight.
"Greater use of AI will enable our staff to spend less time on admin and more time helping taxpayers, as well as better target fraud and evasion to bring in more money for public services," it said in a statement.
However, experts warn there are risks with using AI in this way.

Wikipedia Lost Legal Challenge Against The Online Safety Act
Wikipedia has lost a legal challenge to new Online Safety Act rules which it says could threaten the human rights and safety of its volunteer editors.
The Wikimedia Foundation - the non-profit which supports the online encyclopaedia - wanted a judicial review of regulations which could mean Wikipedia has to verify the identities of its users.
But it said despite the loss, the judgement "emphasized the responsibility of Ofcom and the UK government to ensure Wikipedia is protected".

2-step verification (often shortened to 2SV and sometimes called two-factor authentication) provides a way of 'double checking' that you really are the person you are claiming to be when you're using online services, such as social media, banking or email.
Even if a criminal (or someone simply looking to cause mischief) knows your password, they won't be able to access any of your accounts that are protected using 2SV.
