Community continues ancient tradition in style to bring village together
The annual Gee Cross Community Well Dressing proved a resounding success on Sunday as hundreds of residents and visitors gathered to celebrate one of the village’s most cherished traditions.
Bathed in glorious sunshine, large crowds lined the streets to watch and participate in the colourful parade, led by Ashton Brass Band.

The procession featured The Cheshire Cheese, Dowson Primary Academy, 3rd Gee Cross Scouts, Cubs and Beavers, 2nd Gee Cross Hyde Chapel Brownies and Rainbows, and the Gee Cross and District Women's Institute, all proudly representing the vibrant community spirit of Gee Cross.
Visitors also had the opportunity to admire multiple, beautifully decorated wells, each thoughtfully designed and created by the participating community groups. Their creativity, dedication and hard work were on full display, helping to preserve a much-loved tradition and making this year’s event particularly memorable.
Records reveal that ‘well dressings’ were held regularly in Gee Cross from the 1820’s until around 1878. The Gee Cross and District Women’s Institute re-introduced the celebrations in the year 2000, and celebrations have taken place annually ever since.

The combination of bright sunshine, stunning floral well dressings and a lively parade created a wonderful atmosphere throughout the day, with families, friends and visitors enjoying the celebrations together.
A heartfelt thank you goes to The Cheshire Cheese, Dowson Primary Academy, 3rd Gee Cross Scouts, Cubs and Beavers, 2nd Gee Cross Hyde Chapel Brownies and Rainbows, and the Gee Cross and District Women’s Institute for creating the beautiful well dressings and taking part in the parade. Thanks also go to Ashton Brass Band for leading the procession and to everyone who came along to support the event, helping to make another successful and enjoyable Well Dressing for the whole community.
The Gee Cross Community Well Dressing continues to be a much-loved annual event, celebrating the village’s heritage while bringing together people of all ages to enjoy friendship, tradition and community pride.
