Tameside volunteers needed to support Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal

The Royal British Legion (RBL) is seeking volunteers to help run its annual Poppy Appeal in Tameside.

The annual Poppy Appeal helps raise vital funds for veterans and members of the Armed Forces community via the sale of paper poppies, badges, and other related merchandise.

The charity is actively looking for volunteers across Tameside, but particularly in Ashton-under-Lyne, with opportunities ranging from helping out for a few hours during the appeal to taking on a more active role as a Poppy Appeal Organiser.

The Royal British Legion is one of the UK’s leading Armed Forces charities. It supports serving and former members of the Armed Forces, their families, and dependants, helping people who have served their country to access practical and specialist support when they need it.

The Poppy Appeal is the RBL’s biggest fundraising campaign, and takes place every year. Taking place in the weeks leading up to Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday, it is perhaps best known for the familiar red poppies worn by millions of people across the country.

Behind the poppy is a fundraising campaign which helps the Legion provide support throughout the year. Money raised goes towards services including housing assistance, debt and money advice, employment support, and physical and mental health services.

The appeal depends on thousands of volunteers around the country. More than 3,500 people help the RBL deliver the campaign each year, playing an important role in ensuring the charity can continue supporting the Armed Forces community.

Scott Pringle, Poppy Appeal Manager for the Royal British Legion in Tameside, is encouraging local people to get involved, saying:

“We would encourage anyone who is interested in volunteering for the Poppy Appeal to get in touch with us to find out more.

“If you’re looking for a more active part in the Appeal, we would love to have you as a Poppy Appeal Organiser in Ashton. This role is crucial to delivering the Appeal and organising a team of dedicated volunteers. You will be fully supported in the role, including training before the Poppy Appeal.

“Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, support your community and build your skills.”

The RBL says volunteers are at the heart of the Poppy Appeal, helping to make sure people across Tameside have the opportunity to support the charity's work during the annual period of remembrance.
