Residents were evacuated from an area in Ashton on Sunday afternoon after an artillery shell was found in the canal.
As a precaution the surrounding area around Cavendish Street near the Ashton Canal was evacuated and a cordon set up with members of the public asked to avoid the area.
The shell was safely removed and the scene closed with members of the public able return to the area at around 4pm.
