R2D2 is heading to Ashton

This years Ashton Sci Fi Day, organised by Hyde Fundraisers, is taking place on Saturday May 2nd from 11am.

Once again Ashton’s Ladysmith Shopping Centre is amongst the sponsors for this free community event which brings displays, characters and cosplay fun to the town centre.

Making their home at the centre for the event will be lovable droid R2D2 along with a display featuring Wookie Chewbacca to provide some great photo opportunities for visitors. You may also spot some life-sized character cutouts From Star Trek on display in the centre too during your visit.

The event also marks the final event for the centre's current nominated charity, The Anthony Seddon Fund, who will be onsite on the day to join in the fun. In addition, they will also be hosting this year’s traditional cosplay competition, which is open to all ages. It’s a chance to showcase your favourite character from the world of princesses, gaming, superheroes, sci fi and fantasy plus the villains too! Watch for more details on the Ladysmith Facebook page and The Anthony Seddon Fund on how you can take part. Prizes have been donated by Character Options toys in Oldham, Star Cutouts in Audenshaw and Dr Who magazine.

The Anthony Seddon Fund offers informal peer support for those affected by Mental Health issues in Tameside and their family, friends and carers. They also offer a mental health drop-in running alongside a programme of different holistic and therapeutic activities.

Hyde Fundraisers is a voluntary group which have raised money for good causes since 1985 using characters from Dr Who, Star Wars and many other out of this world franchises.  Charities to benefit from this years Sci Fi Day will include Tameside Little Gems, The Anthony Seddon Fund, RSPCA, Yorkshire Cat Rescue, Beechwood Cancer Care and Door 84.

Peter Brocklehurst from Hyde Fundraisers said “We are thrilled that Ladysmith is part of the event once again and working with The Anthony Seddon Fund. Both children and adults love to show their creative skills costuming as their favourite characters and this event is a great opportunity to do that. I’m looking forward to see what characters will be popping along for the Cosplay Competition for R2D2 to meet!”

Ashton Sci Fi Day is organised by Hyde Fundraisers and sponsored by Ladysmith Shopping Centre, Tameside Markets, Arcades Shopping Centre along with Ashton Town Team through their UK Government Pride in Place funding.
