Heritage Open Days: Discover the history of Mottram Parish Church

Mottram Parish Church will once again be opening its doors to visitors as part of Heritage Open Days, on Saturday 12th September, from 10am to 4pm.

The Church will be opening its doors again in September as part of Heritage Open Days, when historic buildings across the country throw open their doors and invite people to discover the stories, architecture, and communities that have shaped them.

Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture, with hundreds of places taking part and thousands of free activities and events taking place throughout September. In 2026, the festival runs from 11th to 20th September and has the theme “Everyday Histories”, celebrating the ordinary people and stories behind our historic places.

In Mottram, the Friends of Mottram Parish Church will be welcoming visitors to explore this fascinating historic building and discover more about its place in the life of the local community.

There will be guided tours of the church throughout the day, offering visitors the opportunity to look more closely at the building and hear some of the stories behind it. For those who have ever wondered what happens high up in the church tower, there will also be special bellringer tours too. And at 1pm, church organist Matt Harrison will give a special 45-minute organ recital.

There will also be a special exhibition entitled “Life in Mottram Parish as seen through the cartoons of the late Ian Roebuck.”

Ian Roebuck had a wonderful eye for the characters, events and everyday life of the parish, and his cartoons provide a unique – and very entertaining – glimpse into Mottram’s more recent history.

Entry is free, and everyone is welcome.
