Part of a busy Droylsden road was cordoned off for a period after a device was found in the canal.
Police and the bomb disposal unit were summoned to Edge Lane, which runs over the Ashton Canal, on Sunday afternoon (20 September).
Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: "At around 4.10pm on Sunday 20 September 2020, police were called to reports that a device had been found in the canal off Edge Lane, Droylsden.
"Officers attended and the item was safely recovered. A cordon was put in place as a precaution."
