Brewers Fayre closes all its restaurants – including Denton’s Stable Gate

A familiar restaurant chain is disappearing today, as Brewers Fayre shuts all 89 of its restaurants in the UK.

The Stable Gate in Denton is among the restaurants closing its doors, as parent company Whitbread brings the curtain down on the Brewers Fayre brand after more than four decades.

The restaurant, close to Denton Golf Club and Crownpoint Shopping Park, has served people for more than 25 years. However, Brewers Fayre's own website confirms that the Stable Gate will close to the public on Monday, September 7th alongside the other restaurants in the chain. It should be noted that guests staying at the adjoining Premier Inn will continue to have access to food and drink facilities.

The closure brings an end to a long-standing presence in the Denton area. The Stable Gate's name itself reflects the site's history; Brewers Fayre says the building was originally a stable for local horses.

The Tameside pub has also been recognised locally by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), which describes it as a family-friendly, food-focused pub.

Across the UK, all 89 Brewers Fayre restaurants are closing today, marking the end of the chain as a national restaurant brand. The closures are part of a much wider restructuring by Whitbread, which also owns Premier Inn.

Whitbread announced plans earlier this year to retire its branded restaurant businesses and concentrate more heavily on its hotel operation. The company has pointed to substantial increases in operating costs as one of the reasons behind the changes.

The wider shake-up is expected to affect thousands of jobs, although Whitbread has said it hopes to redeploy a significant number of employees elsewhere within the business.

Brewers Fayre is not the only familiar Whitbread restaurant name disappearing. Other brands, including Table Table, Cookhouse + Pub, and Bar + Block, have already closed their remaining restaurants, while Beefeater is due to follow later this week.

For Tameside, however, it is the loss of the Stable Gate in Denton that will be most noticeable.
