Locals are contributing to Ashton west end’s fly tipping epidemic according to local independent councillor, Kaleel Khan.
Newly installed CCTV caught residents dumping bags of rubbish almost on their own doorstep in Layard Street, with two incidents on Thursday and Friday nights.
“Unfortunately, the individuals responsible are local residents living directly opposite Layard Street,” said Cllr Khan. “It is deeply disappointing for both me and the community to witness our neighbours engaging in such careless behaviour - casually dumping their trash and walking back to their homes without a second thought.”
He went on to say that the area’s Neighbourhood Watch volunteers will confront those responsible.
“They will be shown the CCTV footage, educated about the consequences of fly-tipping, and informed of the impact this has on our community.
“Additionally, I will be seeking advice from Tameside Council on the appropriate actions we can take moving forward. This may include issuing fines, prosecuting the offenders, or sending formal warning letters or more.
“We are committed to ensuring that Layard Street remains a clean and welcoming environment for everyone, and we will not tolerate behaviour that undermines this effort.”
Tameside Council revealed this week that they had only brought two prosecutions for fly tipping between February and June 2024, despite environmental enforcement officers attending more than 900 incidents in the borough during the same period.
