United View: Could Liverpool Victory Spark A Reverse Of Fortunes?

After the train wreck performance against Brentford and no wins in their first two games, Manchester United were under intense pressure against Liverpool.

But ten Hag’s men bounced back from last week’s humiliation, winning 2-1 and delivering a hardworking performance. 

Following fan protests and a dreadful start to the season, Old Trafford was like a pressure cooker, however, the players matched the fired-up energy of the crowd. From the offset ten Hag’s side showed relentless intensity and aggression against a Liverpool side missing some key figures. Anthony Elanga was inches away from breaking the deadlock before Jadon Sancho opened his account for the season following some intricate build up play on the wing.

The level of fight shown was exactly what a fan wants to see against Liverpool and was a complete U-turn from the shambolic defeats last season to Jurgen Klopp’s side. Lisandro Martinez was like a man possessed, and his partnership with Raphael Varane appeared to work wonders.

Ten Hag made big calls in his selection, dropping Maguire, Shaw, and Ronaldo, but ultimately, they were the right calls. His punishment following the Brentford defeat may have been questioned at the time but undoubtedly this achieved the desired response as Manchester United outran Liverpool on the night.

Casemiro was unveiled to the crowd prior to kick off and will likely feature in the next match against Southampton. It’s crazy to think this time last week we were shaping up to sign Adrien Rabiot and now we have brought in one of the world’s best defensive midfielders. It may be a panic buy but I also can’t knock it either.

Although the arrival of Casemiro has widely been seen as a positive, many have tried to keep their excitement tamed as it feels like the ownership are using this signing as a distraction from fan unrest. In a similar fashion to the arrival of Jadon Sancho following protests after the proposed European Super League.

More protests took place outside of Old Trafford against the Glazer family and their 17-year tenure as owners of Manchester United. With Sir Jim Ratcliffe showing his interest in purchasing the club, there is a chance that real change could take place in the Manchester United hierarchy. The Glazers have never been favoured by fans, even before they took over in 2005 and for fans it’s been an uphill battle against the incompetent owners. 

The Glazers lack of investment has been clear to see and since the departure of Sir Alex the club has never reached the levels of their former glory. Before you make the argument about the money spent of transfers, just remember, that all that money has been generated by the club itself and not a single penny has come from the owners.

In fact, over the last 10 years £154 million has been taken out by United’s owners, compare that with rivals Manchester City who have had £684 million put in by their owners. They’re also the only owners in the Premier League to take dividends out of their club, showing they use the club as their own personal cash machine. 

From poor recruitment to the European Super League, the Glazers have shown they are out of touch with the game and would be wise to cash out before their share prices drop even further. 

Now is the perfect time for the United fanbase to unify and increase the tension that the Glazer family find themselves under. It’s fine to be happy about the win over Liverpool and the arrival of Casemiro but don’t let it be a distraction from 17 years of neglect and mismanagement.
