United Draw Blank At Old Trafford

Manchester United played out a goalless draw over the weekend as they faced off against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes was given his first start but he was unable to inspire Manchester United to victory on his debut as the £47m new arrival had to settle for a goalless draw against Wolves at Old Trafford.

Sixty-two years ago on Thursday, United suffered the biggest tragedy in their history when eight players were among the 23 passengers who died when the team plane crashed in Munich following a refuelling stop on the way back from a European Cup tie in Belgrade.

Two hours before kick-off on Saturday, fans from both sides gathered for the annual ceremony under the Munich memorial outside the stadium.

It was a game of few chances with United failing to test Rui Patricio in the Wolves goal.

Fernandes had the first real chance of the game as Luke Shaw drilled a cross which made its way to the Portuguese man on the edge of the area but his first-time strike was straight at Patricio.

And that was that for the first half as United had more possession but it was clear that the teams were evenly matched and were reluctant to leave themselves open.

Wolves had a good chance in the second half after a piercing run from Diogo Jota saw him dance through United’s defence but he couldn’t catch his effort to really trouble David de Gea.

Juan Mata went close after some good play by Aaron Wan-Bissaka saw Mata pick the ball up and flash a shot just wide on the turn.

United had a shout for a penalty in the 65th minute as Fred took a shot from just outside of the area which was blocked by João Moutinho seemingly with his arm but the referee waved away the protests.

Then Adama Traore brilliantly led a counter-attack which resulted in him sending Raúl Jiménez through on goal but his effort was saved in the top right corner by De Gea.

The nearest United came to scoring was in the final minute of stoppage time when substitute Diogo Dalot headed Wan-Bissaka's cross narrowly wide, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men have now taken just four points from five games.

The result means United drop down to 6th with their next fixture away at Chelsea.
