Teams suffer mixed fortunes

Our teams suffered mixed fortunes in cup competition on Tuesday night.

Stalybridge Celtic were knocked out of the FA Trophy in the first qualifying round stage on Tuesday night.

Goals in the first 16 minutes from Jason Gilchrist and Jon Shaw earned a 2-0 win for visitors South Shields at Bower Fold.

Celtic improved in the second half. Chances were few and far between, with the best coming to Craig Hobson who hit the crossbar with a header.

Elsewhere, Hyde United advanced to the second round of the Cheshire Senior Cup with a 3-0 win over Cheadle Town at Ewen Fields.

Paddy Lane opened the scoring in the eighth minute by heading in Tom Pratt’s cross. Harry Benns doubled the lead on 34 minutes with a fine finish past the onrushing Cheadle keeper.

Dan Turner made it three just before the break, poking home at the second attempt.
