Tameside teen to represent his country

A talented Tameside teen is preparing to represent his country on the international stage.

Stanley O’Leary, from Droylsden, will be jetting off to the Czech Republic next week to take part in the U16 Men’s Fastpitch Softball European Championship.

The 15-year-old will represent the Great Britain side set to take on Czechia, Denmark, Israel and Croatia.

Years of hard work have led Stanley to this point, with the countless hours spent honing his craft finally paying off.

Speaking ahead of the tournament – which will run from June 30 to July 4 – the St Damian’s student commented:

“I have always loved watching my dad play baseball and softball, so when the chance came up, I started training in Manchester.

“I joined a local slow-pitch team and was encouraged to attend the GB fast-pitch trials.

“Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to play in a variety of positions and develop my pitching through the YFL, competing across the country.

“Being selected to represent Great Britain is a huge honour, and I’m excited to compete in the European Championships.”

The British Softball Federation will also be fielding an U18’s side in the Czech Republic, and are hoping to raise £60,000 to cover the costs of travel, accommodation and training.
