Talented trio make Ewen Fields switch

Hyde United’s summer squad shake up has begun, with three signings already confirmed ahead of the upcoming 2026/27 campaign.

Firstly, speedy winger João Silva has made the switch to Ewen Fields following his departure from fellow NPL Premier side Guiseley.

The 22-year-old made 40 appearances for The Lions last season, and was a thorn in Hyde’s side, scoring home and away against them and catching the eye of Tigers manager Michael Clegg in the process.

“He impressed for Guiseley against us last year and it was one of the most impressive wing performances I’ve seen in a while,” revealed the former Ashton United boss.

“We didn’t think he’d become available because we knew he was under contract at Guiseley, but then we got wind he was coming over to Manchester this summer, so we were straight in on it and we got the deal done very early.

“He’s going to be very exciting, and we’re delighted to have him in.”

Born on the African island of São Tomé, Silva has represented the São Tomé and Príncipe national team on five occasions.

Elsewhere, former Tigers forward James Kirby has returned to the club after over a decade away.

The now 30-year-old made his Hyde debut back in 2013 at the age of 17, and went on to make 18 appearances.

After spells with various non-League sides, Kirby went on to ply his trade overseas, spending three years in Sweden between 2022 and 2025, including a year with former Europa League side Östersunds FK.

The Congleton-born striker – who played under Michael Clegg during their time at Atherton Collieries – spent last season with Maltese top flight side Marsaxlokk FC.

“In terms of his profile, he’s an old-fashioned number nine," said Clegg.

“He runs the channels, he’s big and strong, he scores goals, he’s brave, he’s good with his back to goal, he presses well, and he’s good at running in behind.

“Above all else, he’s a top, top guy and a good teammate, so we’re absolutely delighted to have him.

“He’s coming at a great age. He’s coming here to score goals, and he still wants to make a name for himself in England.”

Following his signing, Kirby added:

“It’s good to be back after 13 years.

“After five years abroad, I am ready for a new challenge in the UK and I'm raring to go.”

Finally, Clegg’s side have dipped into the North West Counties to pick up young midfielder Mo Wassa from Darwen FC.

Since signing in January 2025, the 21-year-old has been a key figure for the Salmoners, featuring in almost every available match.

“It’s a new challenge for me, a new club, and I am looking forward to the challenge of stepping up a few levels,” Wassa told the club following his arrival.

“I’m a box-to-box midfielder, but I can also play the six and like to link up with the front players.”

Clegg also commented on the signing:

“I was made aware of him last summer. I went watching Darwen in a friendly, he was by far the best player on pitch.

“So we ended up getting around to watching him five, six times.

“I just think he can make the step up, I like everything about him as a player, I like his personality on the pitch, I like how he receives the ball, I like how he’s positive and plays forward.”

After a disappointing 2025/26 campaign, in which they narrowly avoided relegation, The Tigers will be hoping these new additions will help them push further up the table next time out.
