A talented Glossop youngster has taken the next step in his rugby league career.
Harry Knight, from Gamesley, has signed for RFL Championship side Oldham RLFC, following his departure from Super League champions Wakefield Trinity.
Since moving to Trinity last year, the 18-year-old has featured regularly for the club’s reserve side, but with first team opportunities limited, he has decided the time is right to move on.
Knight has signed a deal that will keep him at Roughyeds until the end of the 2027 campaign, and despite offers from elsewhere, his previous connections to the club meant the teenage star had no doubts about where his next destination would be.
“It’s unreal for me and my family,” Knight told his new club’s media team following his signing.
“I grew up playing my youth rugby in Oldham. I started at Saddleworth and finished at Oldham St Annes, winning the Oldham Cup Final at Boundary Park.
“I played a couple of matches in the Roughyeds’ pathway system as well, and I watched them from the stands when they were down at Stalybridge and Avro.
“And I’ve got a lot of family from Oldham, so I know they’re really proud of me coming here.”
Roughyeds boss Alan Kilshaw added:
“Harry has got plenty of pace, is a strong athlete and has the ability to cause problems for opposition defences.
“He’s at a stage in his career where he needs to be playing regular first-team rugby, and we believe we can provide him with the right environment to continue his development.
“It’s also important to us as a club that we continue to bring players with connections to the town back to represent Oldham RLFC.
“We’ve assembled a really competitive squad for next season, and Harry will add further quality and competition to our outside backs.
“I’m looking forward to working with him and seeing what he can achieve in an Oldham shirt.”
The RFL Championship season gets underway next January.
