Robins make double swoop

Ahead of the upcoming 2026/27 campaign, Ashton United have made their first two signings of the summer.

Firstly, The Robins have strengthened their backline with the arrival of defender Reece Kendall.

The full-back has a wealth of NPL experience, having spent time with Guiseley and Matlock Town, as well as two separate spells with Bury.

Kendall also had a short spell with Tameside neighbours Hyde United, but failed to make an appearance after signing last March.

“I’m delighted to sign Reece,” said Robins boss Steve Cunningham.

“He is a player of proven quality at these levels even gaining recognition with England C call ups not so long ago.

“Reece is a big personality and needs an environment he can enjoy but re focus on being the player we all know he can be. I am really looking forward to working with him.”

Elsewhere, Ashton have confirmed the signing of experienced winger Justin Johnson, following his release from Macclesfield.

The Dutch-born wide man has an impressive CV, having featured in the Scottish Premiership for Dundee United and Hamilton Academical, as well as being named in the 2024 National League North Team of the Season thanks to his impressive performances for Chorley.

“We have signed some fantastic players in my time at the club, but this has to be up there as one of the biggest,” revealed Cunningham.

“Justin has been one of the standout players in the region over the last 3 to 4 years in the league.”

Johnson and Kendall will be joined next season by the playmaking pair of Al Byrne and James Hardy, who have also put pen to paper for 26/27.
