Injury-time goal sinks the Robins

BetVictor Premier Division: Witton Albion 1-0 Ashton United

An open game, which surprisingly seemed to be heading for a goalless draw, saw the Robins cruelly denied by a last-ditch strike from home full-back Cesaire Lingouba.

The visitors were fielding their new signing from Altrincham, Lewis Walters, on the right wing for the first time and welcomed back Jon Worsnop in goal and Luca Havern in central defence.

Albion started the brighter and after a cross saw Jones’s pass to Luke Wall just cut out by Havern, a long ball made its way to Monaghan but Worsnop was out to the edge of the area to smother well.

Four minutes later, Wall’s cross reached Wardle, whose low effort on the turn rolled against the inside of the post and another Wall cross saw Heath failing to connect and Monaghan then crowded out by Hunt.

Havern was again on hand to block Heath’s effort after Monaghan had pulled back Wall’s cross and Chris Rowney’s pass then found Liam Tomsett in plenty of space in the area from where he fired over.

Jones’ pass through the middle then found Heath surprisingly flagged onside but having rounded Worsnop he could only hit the outside of the post and Gonzales forced Renshaw to tip his effort away after Anghel’s cross field run and Josh Wilson glanced Anghel’s corner over the bar as the half drew to an end.

Anghel was booked on the resumption for pulling back Wall and roles were then reversed as the winger was booked for diving in the area in a challenge with Lufudo.

Rowney then intercepted Heath’s pass just in time before it could reach Sambor and after Wall had skinned Lufudo by the by line Rowney only narrowly avoided conceding an own goal.

With a quarter of an hour left, Aaron Smith cut inside in midfield and clipped the bar from around 20 yards and Sambor’s cross was glanced past the far post for a corner by Heath.

Entering the last minute of added time, a high ball into the area dropped to Lingouba, who steered home almost with the last kick of the game.

Ashton United team: Worsnop, Lufudo, Clee, Havern, Hunt, Rowney, Anghel (Smith 66), Gonzales (Sheridan 71), Tomsett, Wilson, Walters (Tames 56). Subs not used: Slew, Field.
