Hyde CC to defend Cheshire Cup against Didsbury on Sunday

Hyde CC put the disappointment of losing their top-of-the-table game at Nantwich on Saturday behind them, by beating Bowdon in the semi-final of the Cheshire Cup on Sunday.

Reigning champions Hyde won the toss, and their decision to bat first paid dividends with Tom Partridge and Luke Young blasting their way to an opening partnership of 153.

Former Delph captain Xander Selby caught and bowled Partridge, but not before he slugged 80 runs from 62 balls, a knock that included a dozen boundaries.

Selby’s younger brother Lucas then threatened to tear through Hyde’s batsmen, claiming Young for 86 before restricting Charlie Harris, Adam Worrall and Charlie Barnard to less than 20 runs each.

However, Cole Turner and Rian Maisuria shored Hyde up, both spending more than an hour at the crease as the home side reached 300-6 in their 40 overs.

It looked like Hyde would make short work of the visitors after they lost Sid Mahadevan and captain Jack Tipton early on.

Yet, Bowdon turned 18-2 into 248-4 thanks to a magnificent 137 from wicket keeper John Sanders, who cracked 15 fours and 8 sixes from his 99 deliveries.

He was ably assisted by Shardul Viinoaday, who scored 68 before both batsmen fell to ex-Hyde United goalkeeper James Chew, who also clean bowled Lucas Selby to post figures of 3-32.

With the game in the balance Bowdon’s tail disintegrated, losing their final five wickets for just 20 runs and ending on 273 all out.

Hyde will host Didsbury in next week’s final.

Not for the first time, Micky Mellon is absolutely coherent with the Latics fans. In praising his side’s Christmas campaign-within-a-campaign, he said he wants his side to turn draws into wins, and to be “that wee bit more clinical” in front of goal. That is all it would take for Latics to be serious contenders for a play-off place.
