Glossop in safe hands

Glossop North End will have a new man between the sticks next season following the arrival of experienced goalkeeper Ollie Martin.

The 30-year-old joins The Hillmen following his departure from fellow NWCFL Premier side West Didsbury & Chorlton, where he made over 100 appearances and established himself as one of the most reliable stoppers in the division.

Martin also has NPL experience, having spent time with Ashton United, Mossley, Radcliffe and Witton Albion, as well as a handful of National League North appearances picked up during his time at Staybridge Celtic.

The former Fleetwood Town man’s arrival represents a statement of intent from the Surrey Street side, who had to fend off interest from elsewhere to secure his signature.

Following Martin’s signing, GNE boss Lee Wilshaw told the Chronicle:

“I’m absolutely delighted to bring Ollie to the club. Having played alongside him earlier in my career, I’m aware of exactly what he’ll bring to the group. I know the standards he holds of himself and those that he will demand of others too and this has definitely played a big part in my decision to bring him to Glossop.

“It doesn’t surprise me in the slightest that he’s gone on to have such a credible career in non-League football. Everywhere he’s been he’s earned a reputation as a top goalkeeper, and his accomplishments speak for themselves. His experience at different levels, his leadership and his professionalism will be invaluable to the relatively young squad we have.

“As well as his qualities between the posts, Ollie is a fantastic character who will help drive standards throughout the club. He’s someone the players will look up to, and I’m confident he’ll prove to be an excellent addition to the dressing room and the team.

“We’re delighted to welcome him to Glossop North End and can’t wait to get to work with him.”
