Football returns as Droylsden see off Denton

Last Thursday saw the return of non-League football in Tameside, as local rivals Denton Town and Droylsden battled it out for the Geoff Gable Trophy.

The now annual friendly – which was inaugurated last year – sees the sides come together in honour of the former Denton President, who sadly passed away in 2024.

It was The Bloods who lifted the trophy after a comfortable 2-0 win at Whittles Park, in what was a special evening for striker Cody Artwell, who returned to his former stomping ground.

Dave Pace’s side were back in action soon after, travelling to National League North side Buxton on Saturday.

Despite their best efforts, the three-division gap between the two sides came to light, as the Bucks eased to a 6-1 win.

Following their play-off final triumph last time out, Droylsden will play their football in the NWCFL Premier next season, which gets underway on August 1.

Elsewhere, Denton will look to climb the Cheshire Premier Division table after a 9th placed finish in 2025/26.
