FA award for Tameside walking footballer

Local walking footballer Liam Evans recently received the FA playmaker award.

Liam is a passionate and dedicated participant in Active Tameside’s weekly Everyone’s Game walking football sessions.

Liam, who has Down syndrome, joined the sessions over a year ago and has since become a central figure within the group - not only as a player, but as a key supporter of how the sessions run each week.

From the moment he joined, Liam’s enthusiasm and friendliness have made a lasting impact.

He consistently goes out of his way to welcome newcomers, helping them settle in and feel comfortable.

His ability to connect with others has helped foster a warm, inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels they belong.

Liam is genuinely loved by all the participants – his positivity, humour, and kindness have made him a favourite among the group, and his presence always lifts the mood of the session. Liam’s contribution goes well beyond playing.

He regularly helps tidy away the equipment and has even taken on some refereeing duties during matches, demonstrating his reliability, confidence, and growing leadership skills.

His positive attitude and commitment have not only enhanced the experience for other participants but have also shown how inclusive sport can be when people are given the opportunity to thrive.

Peter Boase, Active Through Football Project Manager, shared:

“Liam is a very enthusiastic individual that loves his football. He’s been attending our walking football session for over a year now, and in that time, he has shown his willingness to help as much as he can.

“He’s great with all the other participants, and incredibly welcoming to those who are new to the session.

“With how much of an active role Liam plays in our session, I felt like the FA EE Playmaker course was perfect to start his coaching journey.

“It has been a pleasure seeing his dedication to completing the course and I am so proud of him.”

Liam recently completed the FA EE Playmaker course, marking an exciting step in his journey into volunteering in grassroots football.

His commitment to the course reflects the same dedication he brings to every session – showing not only a love for the game but also a desire to give back to the community he plays such an active role in.

Liam is more than just a participant. He is a teammate, a volunteer, and a role model.

His involvement has had a powerful and positive impact on everyone around him, making him an irreplaceable part of the walking football community.
