Denton stars to represent England

Three members of Denton Town’s squad will be jetting off to Sweden later this year, to take part in the prestigious UEFA Regions Cup.

The unique international competition – which has been running for more than 25 years – gives amateur players from across the globe the opportunity to feature for their national teams in a competitive environment.

England’s squad at the tournament is determined by the winner of the Inter League Cup, which sees various leagues across the country battle it out for the ultimate prize, earning the right to represent their country.

Denton’s Liam McDowell, Harrison Mather and George Antony were all selected as part of the Cheshire Football League side which recently saw off Herts Senior County League’s representatives in the final.

McDowell got himself on the scoresheet in a 3-1 win at the King Power Stadium, the home of former Premier League winners Leicester City.

The Cheshire FA side – who often play their home matches at Ewen Fields – will enter the Regions Cup at the intermediate round, which acts as a qualifying stage, with each of the eight group winners earning a place at the finals in 2027.

The biennial event has a harsh set of entry requirements, to allow for an even playing field, with only those who have played at Step 7 of non-League or below eligible to play.

The exact date for the competition’s intermediate round is yet to be confirmed, but is thought to usually take place between August and December.
