Debutants impress for Hyde in season opener

New signing Ryan O’Brien starred for Hyde as they began their Cheshire County Cricket League season with a thumping home win against Widnes.

The all-rounder built a steady 58 runs before being caught on his 100th delivery.

Put into bat, Hyde were 11/3 after a nervy opening four overs in which they lost Luke Young, captain Tom Partridge and Lancashire academy starlet Rian Maisuria.

O’Brien steadied the ship during his more than two-and-a-half hours at the crease, ably assisted by 39 runs from Charlie Harris and Andrew Jackson pummelling 63 from just 49 balls.

James Chew proved to be obstinate in the tail, too, making 20 not out as the home team posted 234/8.

Widnes failed to find any momentum in their reply.

Openers Rohan Luthra (21) and Aaron Soni (10) were the only top-order batsmen to reach double figures, with Young and Andrew Jackson penning in the visitors and taking five wickets between them.

Aussie left-arm spinner Liam Bowe - also making his debut - then began carving through the rest of the Widnes side, claiming 4-34 in 7.2 overs, with O’Brien removing captain Alex Hewitt who made a quickfire 46 from 47 balls.

The visitors were on 126/9 when Bowe sent Tashaun Leacock back to the pavilion on his first delivery, giving Hyde a 108-run victory.

A few weeks ago on these pages, after Latics had lost three games in a row, conceding three goals in each game, I wrote them off for the season. Consolidation achieved, but with an unfulfilled objective to entertain and compete. Latics have won four games and drawn two, including last week’s stand-off against leaders Bromley at Hayes Lane, and the season is back in the balance. Tranmere Rovers were there to be hammered at Prenton Park, and Latics obliged. Tequila!
