Charlotte powers her way to world championship silver

A former Tameside College student is setting her sights on world records after winning a silver medal at the World Powerlifting Championships in Slovakia.

Charlotte Metcalfe deadlifted 112.5kg in the junior competition last month, which she reached after clinching the GB qualifiers in Warrington earlier in the year.

She is now also part of the Team GB weightlifting setup and has ambitions to appear at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.

“My next goal is to set the European and world records by the time I turn 21, which would be brilliant,” Charlotte said. “After that, I am aiming to transition into competing in the Commonwealth Games and hopefully even further.

“Alongside this, becoming a barrister when I complete my qualification would cap my hard work off.”

Charlotte – known as Charlie – completed an access to higher education course in June and donated her Team GB jersey from the championships to the college.

“To see one of our former students excel on the world stage and break records is inspiring for us all,” said Mark Pollitt, Tameside College’s health and wellbeing officer.

“Her dedication to balancing her career, education, and athletic goals is incredible, and we are proud to have her as part of the college’s alumni.

“Her signed Team GB shirt will be a constant reminder to our students that anything is possible with hard work and commitment.”

A few weeks ago on these pages, after Latics had lost three games in a row, conceding three goals in each game, I wrote them off for the season. Consolidation achieved, but with an unfulfilled objective to entertain and compete. Latics have won four games and drawn two, including last week’s stand-off against leaders Bromley at Hayes Lane, and the season is back in the balance. Tranmere Rovers were there to be hammered at Prenton Park, and Latics obliged. Tequila!

This was one of the good days. Latics were dominant: craftier, harder-working, more resolute and more ruthless than their opponents, better man-for-man, better as a team.
