Buxton swimmer misses bronze medal by a margin

After a hugely successful swim, Buxton's Abbie Wood found herself in fourth position in the 200m individual medley final.

The 22-year-old missed out on a bronze medal by only 0.11 seconds, finishing just behind American Kate Douglas who secured a podium position.

This was heartbreaking for Wood, who was viewed as a contender to continue Team GB’s medal rush in the pool at Tokyo 2020 after qualifying second fastest in the semi-finals.

But the young swimmer who has made her Olympic debut in Tokyo was able to achieve her personal best in this swim, with a fantastic time of 2:08.52.

A tearful Abbie spoke after her swim saying she was, 'gutted' but her achievements at the games have not gone unnoticed.

MP for High Peak Robert Largan voiced his pride for Abbie in a Twitter post that read, "So close! Abbie Wood finished fourth in the 200m individual medley final this morning, just eleven hundredths of a second off a medal.

"An amazing achievement in a fiercely competitive race. Well done Abbie! Everyone in High Peak is really proud of you!"

Making her debut at the games is an incredible achievement for Wood, who just four years ago contemplated quitting the sport after feeling 'embarrassed' during a crash at the heats of the 2017 World Championships as an 18-year-old.

Team GB have had an amazing flurry of medals in the swimming events this year, with three golds and one silver to date, including Tom Daley and Matty Lee's incredible gold diving performance and world champion Adam Peaty's reign in the 100m breaststroke.
