Bloods thrash Skelmersdale

Droylsden continued their good run with a convincing three-nil win over bottom-side Skelmersdale United on Saturday.

Goals from Mauro Mendes and Nelson Van helped Dave Pace’s side maintain a good pace in their pursuit of promotion.

The Bloods got off to a fast start, creating several good chances early on but the scoring began in the 16th minute when Ben Lowe played in Mauro Mendes, who provided a low finish past the goalkeeper with his left foot.

It didn’t take long for Mendes to cause further torment for the visitors, grabbing his brace only a minute later. A fast counterattack from the Bloods led to Joel Ankers teeing up Mendes, who again finished with his left foot for his third goal of the season.

The home side were in complete control and were denied a third in the first half when Eoin Charles had the ball in the back of the net, but the assistant referee flagged for offside.

The second half followed a similar pattern with Skelmersdale unable to live with Droylsden’s pace down the flanks. The Bloods caused all sorts of problems as the visitors hung on to prevent more damage.

However, Droylsden got their third in the 66th minute, with Nelson Van heading home at the back post from Sheriff Njie’s floated cross. Dave Pace’s side were unable to grab a fourth despite their best efforts with Njie cutting inside onto his left foot but putting the ball just wide of the post.

It’s now 23 points out of a possible 30 for Droylsden, a fantastic start to their campaign and playing highly entertaining football. The Bloods will be hoping to continue their unbeaten run on Saturday as they travel to Thornton-Cleveleys who sit 13th in the league table.

Not for the first time, Micky Mellon is absolutely coherent with the Latics fans. In praising his side’s Christmas campaign-within-a-campaign, he said he wants his side to turn draws into wins, and to be “that wee bit more clinical” in front of goal. That is all it would take for Latics to be serious contenders for a play-off place.
