Bank Holiday football round-up: Derby day delight for Curzon and Glossop

Both Ashton sides met in the league for the first time in over seven years on Bank Holiday Monday, as Curzon Ashton welcomed Ashton United to the Tameside Stadium. 

A first half brace from Brad Holmes saw the Nash claim derby day bragging rights, marking a miserable return for Robins boss Steve Cunningham. 

Holmes drew first blood inside three minutes, turning home Harvey Hayhurst’s cross to get his side off to a dream start. 

And it didn’t take long for the former Hyde man to net his second, racing in behind and keeping his cool to slot past Tommy Taylor just past the half-hour mark. 

The Robins responded well after the break, with James Hardy steering over before Dan Turner forced a goal line clearance from the covering Joel Amado. 

Hosts Curzon then came a whisker away from adding a third, with Joe Nolan’s long-range effort rattling the crossbar. 

Despite their best efforts, the visitors were unable to find a route back into the game, with Adam Barton’ side holding firm to seal their third league win on the bounce. 

As for Cunningham’s men, it’s now four without victory in the league. 

Elsewhere, a grandstand finish at Surrey Street saw Glossop North End take the spoils, as local rivals Droylsden left empty handed.

A stoppage time strike from Max Bardsley-Rowe saw the Hillmen climb to the top of the NWCFL Premier Division table, in front of a bumper crowd of 713. 

Lee Wilshaw’s side stormed into an early lead after Ethan Sutcliffe pounced on a defensive mix-up to tap into an empty net on 21 minutes. 

But the visitors made a dream start to the second half, with Jamie Robinson bundling home at the back post to draw the Bloods level just two minutes after the restart. 

Hosts GNE continued to push after the setback, forcing a number of smart saves from substitute stopper Jordan Latham, and finally found the breakthrough deep into added time. 

Fellow substitute Barsdley-Rowe delivered the killer blow with virtually the last kick of the game, as his deflected effort finally found a way past the inspired Latham to send the Hillmen faithful wild.  

Meanwhile, Hyde United brought their three-game winless run to an end in emphatic fashion with a statement win over title hopefuls Bury. 

Jack Redshaw’s late strike was enough to see the Tigers through in front of over 2000 supporters at a packed out Ewen Fields. 

Following his superb debut at Bamber Bridge, on-loan forward Max McCarthy picked up where he left off, sweeping home the opener on 22 minutes to quieten the healthy visiting support. 

But the Shakers fans were back in full voice on the stroke of half time when George Glendon drilled in the leveller. 

Michael Clegg’s side then wrestled back the lead with 20 to play, with McCarthy at the heart of it once again. 

The Radcliffe man piled the misery on his parent club’s rivals, squaring for his skipper who rammed home the winner. 

Finally, in the NPL West, both Mossley and Stalybridge Celtic suffered defeats.

The Lilywhites were beaten 2-0 at Wythenshawe, while The Celts suffered a crushing 4-0 defeat at home to Atherton Collieries.
