Yobs on electric bikes damage greens at Werneth Low Golf Club

Damage caused to one of the greens by yobs riding electric bikes.

Vandals have attacked a Hyde golf club causing extensive damage to the greens.

Yobs on electric bikes and scooters have cup up the turf at Werneth Low Golf Club.

Ben Thompson, professional and manager at the club on Werneth Low Road, Geecross said sports grounds in the area are regular victims to vandaIs.

He said the golf club had been targeted in recent weeks and had suffered damage in the past.

Werneth Low Golf Club have unfortunately been victims many times in recent years and have suffered again in recent weeks.

He said: “We have been vandalised again causing thousands in damages on our greens from electric bikes and it's once again in the school holidays.

“We are beyond despair trying to catch these cretins and the police will do nothing about it unless we have CCTV footage, which unfortunately is not possible and is sad to think we actually need it for a golf course.

“The local police, council, mayor, councillor and trusts are all involved and helping and we want to spread the word far and wide. The club cannot afford for this to keep happening, just as we were starting to get back on our feet.

In 2021, following the easing of lockdown restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic, vandals caused thousands of pounds of damage to the golf club and nearby country park.

Throughout February and March, Latics went on an astonishing run that put them in charge of their own destiny – if they had won every game from that point, they would have been in the play-offs no matter what happened elsewhere. The team they would have had to displace from the play-off spots (there was only one) was Salford City.
