People in Oldham are being urged to seek help and support if they are experiencing domestic abuse.
Greater Manchester Victims' Services (GMVS) reminds people that help is available as they mark Domestic Abuse Awareness Month this October.
GMVS, which is delivered by the charity Catch22, is a confidential service supporting people who have been victims of crime, whether or not they have been in contact with the police and regardless of how long ago the crime happened.
Domestic abuse can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, background or circumstances. It is not always physical. Abuse can include controlling behaviour, emotional or financial abuse, intimidation, isolation and coercive control.
The impact can reach far beyond the person experiencing the abuse, affecting children, families, friendships, workplaces and the wider community. Throughout October, GMVS is focusing on spreading awareness, so people know they do not have to face it alone.
Practical and emotional support are tailored around each person’s individual needs. This can include listening and helping someone understand their options, safety planning, practical advice, and referrals or links to specialist services where needed.
Domestic Abuse Awareness Month is an opportunity to remind people across Oldham that asking for help is a sign of strength. If you, or someone you know, are experiencing domestic abuse, GMVS is available to listen, support and provide help.
Caroline Lumsdon, Head of Service for Greater Manchester Victims’ Services, said: "Greater Manchester Victims' Services is here to support anyone in Oldham and across Greater Manchester who has experienced domestic abuse.
“Domestic abuse can take many forms, including intimidation, controlling and coercive behaviour, emotional or financial abuse, as well as physical violence. All can have a devastating impact on victims and those around them.
“We want people to know they are not alone and that they will be listened to without judgement. Whether or not an incident has been reported to the police, and regardless of when it took place, help and support are available."
Those seeking support can contact GMVS by email, GMVictims@catch-22.org.uk or by telephone: 0800 876 6155
The helpline is open 8am – 6pm Monday to Friday, with late nights until 8pm available on Wednesday, as well as from 9am – 5pm on Saturday.
