Following the local elections on May 7, the Liberal Democrat group on Oldham Council has elected Sam Al-Hamdani as the new leader, and Mark Kenyon as the deputy leader.
Councillor Al-Hamdani said: “It’s always a privilege for any councillor to represent their ward, and to do our best for the people of Oldham on the Council.
“While the Liberal Democrats increased our vote in many of our target wards, showing the faith that many people have in our work, we also respect the overall results that we saw.
“We will continue to work hard for our local residents, where I think we have a track record that no one else can compete with.
“We will also continue to pursue the national changes that we have achieved, such as the recent introduction of a new law criminalising street harassment and changing the regulations to block people on the sex offenders’ register from being able to seek election.”

Councillor Kenyon (pictured above) added: “The election results have left Oldham in a precarious position; one that very few places in the country, if any, have faced.
“Politicians need to show responsibility, and not to shy away from the difficult position that we find ourselves in.
“While we don’t like the result, we respect the democratic process, and a way forward needs to be found starting with the two largest parties –Labour and Reform. People expect their councillors to deliver for local people, regardless of the situation, and it’s our intention to find a way to do that.”
