Review: We Belong! Drama Dept. Kids bring the stage to life

Musical showcases are always an enjoyable spectacle. Bringing beloved musicals to one stage is also never an easy task – Enter the Drama dept. with their seniors bringing ‘We Belong’ – a musical showcase masterclass.

This whole show was not just a musical showcase; it was a showcase of raw talent put on by a group of youngsters who have very bright futures ahead of them. Music numbers from the likes of ‘The Lion King’, ‘Chicago’ ‘Mean Girls’ and even some hit from the singing swedes and ‘Mamma Mia’. I was very impressed with the inclusion of ‘&Julliet’ too – I’ve always found that it is hit and miss with some people but the numbers brought to life were ace! This show had such a creative flare to it, every number was so well poised, and it is all down to the talent of tomorrow. Some of these young guns have such massive futures ahead of them if this production is anything to go by. Some of the vocals within ‘We Belong’ were outstanding. There were some difficult songs in there, but it was like water off a duck’s back for these guys and it’s truly wonderful to see.

Each number had it’s own wow factor – and each member of the cast was able to have their moment throughout the evening. There were even some people in this show who I know very well and consider friends but even they blew me away with songs I never expected them to sing, let alone bring the house down with. There was also a level of Uniqueness to the dances too, some of which were even choreographed by the seniors themselves, which just piles on the talent that they have.

The Bulk of the Choreography was put together by Jess and Tracy Harper and some creativity sprinkled in by Alex Burgess. With not a great deal of space to work with the Choreography utilised every inch of it. It really is a hat tip to these three with the way this group executed the show, and I definitely look forward to seeing more that this trio pioneer.

Normally, I would individually name the ‘Stars’ for there performance but it’s not just a few in this case, it’s all of them. Each person on that stage put everything into the performances and I will eat my hat if we don’t see them on the biggest stages in the coming years, they all deserve it and it’s living proof that high quality theatre does not just exist in the professional realms. It runs deeper and this is the type of show and these are the quality of performers that casting agencies should be going to for the next big thing. They would have absolutely found it.

To all of the ‘We Belong’ cast and production team – bravo. What a wonderful evening of musical prowess.
