Tameside Councillor nominated for prestigious national award

A Tameside councillor has been shortlisted for a major national honour at the LGiU & CCLA Cllr Awards 2025.

The Local Government Information Unit (LGiU) awards are dedicated to recognising the tireless work of councillors across the UK.

St Peters independent councillor, Kaleel Khan has been nominated in the Community Champion category, which celebrates councillors who go above and beyond to support local people and improve neighbourhood life.

The LGIU & CCLA Cllr Awards shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes of local democracy, acknowledging the hard work, vision and leadership that councillors bring to their areas. Now in their latest year, the awards celebrate those making a real difference across England, Wales and Scotland.

The winners for England and Wales will be revealed at a special ceremony at the Guildhall in London on Tuesday, 18 November 2025 at 7pm.

Cllr Kaleel Khan said: “I’m pleasantly surprised by this nomination from the LGA, I didn’t even know my constituents had put my name forward. This is a moment of truth for me: on 18 November in London, I’ll be proud to represent St Peter’s, Tameside, and our amazing volunteers. Win or lose, being nominated and carrying our community’s voice to a national stage is an achievement in itself. Thank you to St. Peter’s.”
