Stalybridge Town Team volunteers honoured by High Sheriff of Greater Manchester

Volunteers who dedicate their time to supporting Stalybridge have received special recognition from the High Sheriff of Greater Manchester for their contribution to the community.

Stalybridge Town Team was presented with the award by High Sheriff of Greater Manchester Mark Llewellin DL during the fifth annual Bridge Fest on Saturday, September 5.

The presentation came as a surprise to volunteers in the middle of one of their busiest days of the year and recognised the Town Team for its “good and valuable services to the community.”

The award is particularly significant as the High Sheriff is an independent, non-political Royal appointment and one of the oldest civic offices in the country, with origins stretching back more than 1,000 years.

Each High Sheriff serves for a year on an unpaid and voluntary basis. The modern role includes supporting the judiciary, emergency services and agencies involved in law and order, alongside recognising charities, voluntary organisations and individuals making an important contribution to their communities.

For Stalybridge Town Team, the recognition came during an event which demonstrated much of what its volunteers work throughout the year to achieve.

Bridge Fest has grown considerably since it was first launched five years ago, with this year's event featuring 41 acts across 14 venues, with all performances free to attend.

Town Team volunteers work behind the scenes alongside local businesses, venues, performers and sponsors to organise the festival and encourage more people to visit and enjoy Stalybridge.

A spokesperson for Stalybridge Town Team said: “This was a complete surprise and an incredibly proud moment for all of us.

“Everything we do is driven by our love for Stalybridge. We are volunteers and give our time because we want to see the town thrive, bring people together and showcase the fantastic businesses, venues and people we have here.

“To receive this recognition from the High Sheriff, particularly in the middle of Bridge Fest when the town was absolutely buzzing, made it even more special.

“This award belongs to every volunteer who gives their time, not just on the day of an event but during the weeks and months of work that go on behind the scenes.”

The Town Team also thanked the businesses, performers, sponsors and wider community for supporting Bridge Fest and its work throughout the year.
